It’s Friday afternoon why not grab a cold beer from the fridge, shut the laptop and take 60 seconds with Steve Mitchell from The Castle Inn Hotel

What advice would you give someone before they took a leap into the accommodation business?

Crikey, how long have we got? Well, if you don’t like hard work – don’t do it. If you are not prepared to be at everyone’s disposal 24 hours a day – don’t do it. If you don’t know what clean looks like, or can’t see dirt – don’t do it. If you are not prepared to constantly improve your accommodation – don’t do it. But if you can manage all of these points and keep smiling you have every chance of success.

What do you think is the most important thing about being running your own B&B, guest house or small hotel?

Great staff.

What’s the funniest thing that a guest has requested?

A room for two hours for a meeting with his “sister”!

What is one thing you wish you knew before getting into this industry?

Next week’s winning lottery numbers.

What is the best part of your job?

I like that it’s very social.

What tips do you have to make sure guests book with you directly?

Charge more at the OTA’s so if they don’t book direct it isn’t the end of the world. Speak to as many as possible and explain why they paid more for their room.

Can you offer any tips for making sure you stand out against your competition?

Whatever it is, clean it and then clean it again.

What is the nicest thing a guest has said about their stay with you?

That it’s a home from home. We (fortunately) hear that a lot.

Why did you choose to get into the accommodation business and what career did you have before?

I worked in IT before and property was a bargain price.
