It’s time to put up your feet for a minute, switch on the kettle and break out the hobnobs for 60 seconds with Graham Lightwood from Landon Villa Guest House in Pembrokeshire.
What advice would you give someone before they took a leap into the accommodation business?
Be sure that you are ready for a complete lifestyle change. Be aware that your home will have people coming and going and entering your property at all hours; possibly day and night. And you need to know the requirements of guests regarding what they want and need from your home.
What do you think is the most important thing about being running your own B&B, guest house or small hotel?
The most important aspect is that the guests are staying with you, so be prepared to put them first and learn from your mistakes…as you will make mistakes.
What’s the funniest thing that a guest has requested?
A clairvoyant.
What is one thing you wish you knew before getting into this industry?
Not to waste money! One example is to buy all the same bed side lamps with the same bulb fitting so when a bulb goes you have the same bulb that fits all lamps.
What is the hardest part of your job?
A one-night room turn around, becomes really tiring. Especially when you’re constantly having to change bedding and then clean rooms and bathrooms.
What is the best part of your job?
Meeting people from all over the world and getting a little insight into where they are from.
What tips do you have to make sure guests book with you directly?
Talk to them when they are with you and make sure they take a business card with them! Also make your own website easy to read and informative.
Can you offer any tips for making sure you stand out against your competition?
Comfy beds, a good choice of breakfast and a squeaky clean house; also be friendly and helpful.
Why did you choose to get into the accommodation business and what career did you have before?
We always thought we would be good in this type of business and that we could make a success of it. I had a business fitting all types of film to glass and my partner was a scenes of crime police officer.
