The Holcombe Inn is a 17th century inn located in the heart of the Somerset countryside. Guests can enjoy log fires to keep warm in the restaurant and pub, local ales, fine wines, real ciders and an extensive whisky collection. They provide individually designed bedrooms, gold painted roll top baths, a wet room with rain shower, crisp linen and beautiful views across open fields towards Mendip Hills and Downside Abbey.
The property is ideally located close to many nearby attractions to explore such as Glastonbury Tor, Cheddar Caves, the city of Wells, Babington House and Longleat. You can even borrow some wellies and a choice of dogs from a family of five for a spot of dog walking!
We spoke to owner Julie Berry about what makes her business so successful:
How long have you been in the B&B business?
I have been in the business for 5 years.
What do you think the key to success for your business is?
Quality, consistency, passion to please and exceed expectations in all areas.
What do you do to keep guests coming back?
It’s what they tell us…. beautiful accommodation, amazing staff who all really care, stunning food and an exceptional breakfast
Do you have any advice for other B&B owners?
Never be complacent, keep improving,and look after your staff and they will look after your guests!
What types of jobs do you hire out vs doing yourself?
We have staff for all areas of the hotel/restaurant but we outsource laundry and have general tradesmen for maintenance.
What makes your B&B unique?
Individuality in all rooms, fun and quirkiness, award-winning breakfast and a vast selection of spirits and huge ‘top helf’ whisky selection.
What’s the strangest thing a guest has left behind?
A whole wardrobe including suitcase and false teeth!
What is one thing you wish someone had told you before you went into the B&B industry?
Don’t worry or panic when you start off, everything can be overcome.
