Dating back to at least 1819, this 80-foot former flour mill has overlooked the picturesque Norfolk village of Cley for over 200 years. The unacquainted passerby would never know that inside this historic complex lie luxury self-catered cottages and rooms, converted for total comfort but retaining awe-inspiring traces of the past.
Natalie and Varian Bush have assumed the responsibility of looking after Cley Windmill, overseeing the astonishing preservation of the Grade II listed building. Visitors can stay in the room where the miller once slept, as well as in the windmill itself. Admire the grandeur of the original fireplace in the breakfast room, or ascend to the compact room at the top for stunning views of the surrounding area – as well as of the windmill’s sails!
Cley Windmill’s uniquely quirky character is reflected in its fascinating history. It was inherited by Lieutenant Colonel Hubert Blunt in 1934 and became a favourite retreat for his grandson – internationally famed singer James Blunt. Earlier this year, Cley Windmill was featured on the Channel 4 TV show World’s Most Secret Hotels, and it has been Editor’s Choice in the ‘Quirky’ category of the Good Hotel Guide.
